Flu Season is Nothing to Sneeze At!

The Procrastinator's Last Chance Clinic has been scheduled for December 22 from 2pm - 6pm at Shepherd of the Valley-Home Health, 5525 Silica Road, Austintown.

Cost is only $10!  Cash, check, or traditional Medicare is accepted for payment.  Supplies are limited.  No appointment is necessary - it is first come, first shot.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year. The "flu shot" consists of an inactivated vaccine (containing killed virus) containing three influenza viruses-one A (H3N2) virus, one A (H1N1) virus, and one B virus. The viruses in the vaccine change each year based on international surveillance and scientists' estimations about which types and strains of viruses will circulate in a given year.  About two weeks after vaccination, antibodies that provide protection against influenza virus infection develop in the body.

People with a severe allergy to chicken eggs should not be vaccinated without first consulting a physician.  In addition people who have a moderate-to-severe illness with a fever should wait until they recover to get vaccinated.

In his comments, Kurt Sauer, Shepherd of the Valley Board President, noted “Each year we gather to recognize and honor individuals nominated in recognition of their outstanding contributions to, by, and on behalf of our Valley and its Senior Citizens.  The eighteen nominated this year bring the total number so honored in the past four years to eighty.  They embody the spirit of our Valley—working selflessly for the betterment of all, seeking no compensation or accolade, and constantly seeking opportunities to be of service to their communities, churches, families, and to Senior Citizens throughout the Valley.”

“On behalf of the Valley Legacy Committee and Shepherd of the Valley,” he concluded, “we honor the nominees and the impact these outstanding Community Citizens have and to recognize each of them for their contributions to the betterment of all of us in this Valley.”

“The Valley Legacy Awards continue to showcase the tremendous work done by and for seniors in our community,” states Don Kacmar, Executive Director, Shepherd of the Valley.  “The many special ways that our nominees contribute to our Valley make them truly unique individuals.  Shepherd of the Valley is honored to be part of recognizing these wonderful people.”

Since 2005, more than 80 people and organizations have been nominated by family, peers, and co-workers with 17 receiving the Valley Legacy Award.  This year, 18 nominations were received from across the Valley.  Nominees hailed from across the tri-county area and included women and men, a couple whose lives are so intertwined that one could not be considered without the other, and one posthumous nominations.

Congratulations to everyone who was nominated and to the award recipients. Thank you for the generous support from the community, sponsors, and judges in making the Valley Legacy Awards such a success.  A short bio of each award recipients follows.
