It’s Summer Concert Time!

Summer is nearly here which means that the staff at Shepherd of the Valley in Boardman has been busy planning an exciting summer of lawn concerts.  Three concerts, all free and open to the public, are scheduled.

  • Tuesday, June 18th :               The Steve Fazzini Band
  • Thursday, July 18th:               The Calypso Gypsies Trio
  • Tuesday, August 20th:           The Jim Frank Trio

Bring a lawn chair or blanket and plan to have a toe tappin’ time.  All concerts start at 7pm.

In the case of inclement weather, the concerts will move indoors (due to space limitations, indoor concerts must be restricted to residents only).

2nd Wind Dream Showcases Inner and Outer Beauty

The Dream Team at Shepherd of the Valley-Niles and Raphael’s School of Beauty Culture, Inc. recently teamed up to give Judy Bittner a well-deserved day of pampering.

As a homemaker and stay at home mom, Judy, a resident at Shepherd of the Valley-Niles, loved taking care of her family.  However, with all those responsibilities she never had the time to pamper herself. On February 6, she finally got that pampering thanks to the instructors and students at Raphael’s School of Beauty Culture.

Judy with Bridgette and Brandy at Raphael's School of Beauty Culture

Judy’s day started at breakfast with the surprise news that her dream of going to a spa was coming true. At Rafael’s, she received a new modern hair style and a glittery blue manicure from student Brandy and new make-up from Bridgette.

“They aren’t going to let me back in at Shepherd of the Valley,” Judy said when her new look was revealed. “I am too beautiful!”

Judy’s outgoing personality touched everyone, and a few tears were shed and lots of pictures taken to capture the day.  “Its days like today and people like Judy,” Brandy exclaimed, “that make me realize this is exactly what I am supposed to do.”

With her new ‘do and make-up, Judy was off to lunch with daughter Pam at their favorite place, the Olive Garden. Their arrival was like a reunion with wait staff visiting the table and bringing Judy her favorite meal; linguine marinara, salad, and Diet Coke.  Dessert was on the house thanks to the generosity of manager Joe Bezilla.

The conversation never stopped and everyone learned about Judy’s competitiveness and her love of motorcycles, fringe and Ford Mustangs.

This day was a perfect 2nd Wind Dream and will make Judy and everyone who had a part in it smile for long time.

5 Tips For Helping Parents Make Good Health Care Decisions

Part of being the child of aging parents involves helping with health care decisions. This can be challenging, particularly when we are out of the area.  We often think we know exactly what our parents need and should be doing, but they don’t seem to be getting with the program!

The reality is no one wants to admit they are getting old and need assistance.  Our parents want to maintain their independence and be in control of their own lives.  Unfortunately, this can lead to unsafe living arrangements and arguments about what to do.

Here are five tips for helping the older members of our families make the decisions and get the level of care they need.

Be patient. Remember an aging family member will make decisions based on their life experiences — which are frequently quite different from yours.

Break big decisions into several smaller ones. If they’re overwhelmed, help them break a big decision down into several smaller steps. For example, a decision about moving to an assisted living apartment can start with a short respite stay.  There is no commitment to make the move permanent and you both can “try on” the retirement community.

Be prepared for some initial confusion and distress. Change is hard. Most people want to “age in place” if possible. When they must move to a new environment, change can initially be distressing.  This is especially true if they are grappling with dementia. So be prepared and be patient.

Have a plan when coming home from the hospital. Your family member may come home from the hospital requiring quite a bit of care. While you may want to provide care yourself, that may not be practical.  Check your health insurance to see if it includes home health services, such as At Home With Shepherd, Shepherd of the Valley’s home health agency.

If changes need to be made at home, such as ramps or grab-bars in the bathroom, or there is frail spouse at home…or no one to help, Shepherd also offers Almost Home at the Poland and Howland communities. These fully furnished condos provide a safe place to stay while home is being readied.  Download a brochure

Your presence and involvement is important. All individuals, especially the elderly, who have an actively involved family member, get better care. Your presence and involvement in a family member’s care should be welcomed by health care providers and signals that you are concerned and want them well cared for.
