Put simply, dialysis is a way of cleaning your blood. It is a medical treatment for people with end stage renal disease (ESRD) that does some of the work healthy kidneys would do, including:
- Removing waste, salt and extra water from your body
- Regulating your body’s fluid balance
- Helping to control your blood pressure
The kidneys are essential organs, so patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), more commonly known as kidney failure, will need dialysis or a kidney transplant.
We use a process called ‘hemodialysis’. The word hemo means “blood” and dialysis means “filter.” Simply put, hemodialysis is a process where blood is filtered outside the body by a machine called a dialyzer or “artificial kidney,” and then returned to your body.
Dialysis is a safe procedure administered by trained medical professionals at Shepherd of the Valley Boardman. Proper personal protective equipment (PPEs), like gloves, masks, hand washing, etc., are used for each patient.
Traditional dialysis patients receive treatment three times per week for an average of four hours per session. With our state-of-the-art hemodialysis, patients will receive treatment for under three hours, five days per week. This results in gentler, more comfortable dialysis with improved health outcomes.
No, our dialysis treatment is an in-patient model. All dialysis patients will stay in the Skilled Nursing rooms at Shepherd of the Valley Boardman for the length of their stay.
While there are side effects to dialysis treatment, our state-of-the-art model aims to minimize these effects. Our NxStage hemodialysis machines offer proper treatment with reduced blood pressure, increased fluid removal, less fatigue, the ability to continue daily activities, and more!
