Scrappers and Shepherd of the Valley Partnership Benefits Community Residents

Now that the Mahoning Valley Scrappers season has come to an end, we at Shepherd of the Valley felt now would be a good time to reflect on the Scrappers time in the area, and our role during that time.  Our partnership with the Scrappers has been mutually beneficial, and has played a significant role in the fans’ and residents’ respective experiences.

The Team

The Scrappers have closed their 21st season as the Minor League Class-A Short Season affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.  They have been a staple of the Mahoning Valley and an Indians Minor League affiliate since their founding in 1999. Throughout their time here, they have done their part to help Mahoning Valley residents make memories that will last a lifetime.  They have captured 6 New York-Penn League Pinckney Division titles, and won the New York-Penn League Championship 1 time in 3 appearances. The Scrappers have produced a number of MLB stars, such as Asdrubal Cabrera, CC Sabathia, and Victor Martinez.  They have also given fans the chance the see current Indians stars, such as Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez, Shane Beiber, Jason Kipnis, and Greg Allen. The Scrappers involvement and legacy in the community has meant so much to us and the people of the Mahoning Valley.

Shepherd of the Valley’s Role

Although this season did not end the way fans had hoped, we know that everything we’ve done off the field with the Scrappers has been an absolute success.  Our collaboration has benefitted the Scrappers organization and their fans, as well as ourselves and our residents. Throughout the 2019 season, Shepherd of the Valley was the senior season ticket sponsor, which helped pave the way for Tuesday night home games being Senior Night.  Our work on Food Truck Friday and the Annual Wellness Night were also major successes, as were the community nights on our campuses. We have done our part to help the players as well, providing housing for Scrappers players, coaches, and staff. The generosity was reciprocated, as the Shepherd of the Valley Foundation was one of the 50/50 recipients throughout the 2019 season.

Moving Forward

After the successes that both Shepherd of the Valley and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers have had as a result of the partnership, we expect the partnership to continue in the future.  Our hope is that both organizations can continue to enhance not only the experiences of fans and residents, but of all Mahoning Valley citizens. Shepherd of the Valley would like to thank the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for an amazing season, regardless of the outcome on the field, and for everything they do for the Mahoning Valley!
